Brent Allcock - Fee Based Financial Planner 2019-02-03T16:26:50+08:00

Thank you for visiting my website. I'm Brent Allcock , a Financial Planner based in Singapore specialising in solutions to the financial issues people face.

My clients come from all walks of life. I work with Australians, New Zealanders, British, Continental Europe, and Singaporeans, with a working knowledge of the various tax and planning opportunities available for each jurisdiction. I've had experience in untangling and demystifying complex and convoluted “insurance” people have acquired over the years, from ILP and “Jumbo” policies to Portfolio Bonds.

I've worked with Australian, New Zealand, British, Singaporean and Continental European expatriates based in South East Asia to help optimise their opportunities whilst offshore. As an Australian CFP©™ qualified and trained financial planner, I strive to provide truly comprehensive and integrated advice focusing on my client’s needs and goals.

My essential unique identifier and differentiating point is that I am strictly fee-based, which means I rebate commissions as far as possible in the regulatory framework. What this means to you is there are no hidden costs and my services are completely transparent, so you can make an informed decision in choosing an advisor.

I'm CFP©™ qualified, which means I'm obligated by the CFP code of conduct to put clients interest always before my own, and am held to the highest possible ethical and fiduciary standards. I'm bound by the CFP Code of Conduct.

Individuality - Brent Allcock - Fee Based Financial Planner

Your Interests First

Following our first meeting, I will detail the areas I believe I can provide value and advice. If there is limited opportunity to provide assistance – I will say that. In working out your goals and objectives, my goal is to build trust so that you can have peace of mind that I will only recommend strategies that are in your best interest and are aligned to your personal goals.

Transparency - Brent Allcock - Fee Based Financial Planner

Fee Based

What does fee-based mean exactly; it means all fees and charges are clearly and transparently disclosed, there are no hidden commissions. You will always know what you are paying and what fee’s you are being charged. Your interests are always front of mind and my first priority.

Alignment of Interests - Brent Allcock - Fee Based Financial Planner

Alignment of Interests

To have a mutually beneficial business relationship, I must ensure your interests are aligned with mine. Put simply what this means is my remuneration is tied to your success in achieving the financial goals we help you to plan for.

Quality not Quantity - Brent Allcock - Fee Based Financial Planner

Boutique and Tailor Made

Every client’s needs are specific to them, my business model is to work with clients to produce a custom made road map for financial success. Nothing is “off the shelf” or pre-populated templates, and every piece of the road map is stress tested leading edge technology.

Strategies and solutions, not products

My role as a financial adviser is to investigate options to solve issues or objectives you have. Too many advisers push products that are in the adviser’s interest with complex and hidden fee structures. My focus is to present strategies where I can add significant value, and then present the options to enable those strategies come to fruition and provide a solution.

Many so called “financial planners or advisers” in this region are “tied agents” whose sole focus are their own bank’s or insurance company products. Driven by commission built into the product, and often obscure to understand, many advisers primary focus is to push a product and drive their revenue at customer’s expense.

My focus is on the client, and believe that by doing good and proper work which benefits the client, which is in their sole interest, there is a mutually beneficially agreement.

Options and Implementation

There are essentially four options available open for investment:

  • Do It Yourself
  • Through a Bank or Insurance company
  • Through a tied agent
  • Through an Independent Advisor

All have their place. Being licensed with an Advisory Firm owned by the principles, who are not aligned with any financial institution, there is a greater range of solutions available compared to any Institutional related “in-house” product.

We can consider a larger universe of solutions than institutionally owned advisor firms.

Comprehensive Financial Advice Across a Range of Areas

I provide as comprehensive and integrated financial advice practical to a client’s personal situation and circumstances. Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness is the type of insurance that pays out a lump sum on the diagnosis of a specified illness. Different forms of cover have different conditions – for example early stage cancers versus pay-out at stage 3 cancer. I provide a comprehensive assessment of what areas you are protected in and analyse where the gaps are and then options and costs to bridge those gaps.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance

Life Assurance is a lump sum to provide financial security and peace of mind for you and your loved ones should an unexpected death occur. It’s designed to substitute lost income and cover ongoing family expenses if members of the family were no longer around. Some employers provide “death in service” cover which ceases on ending employment. What levels of risk are presented to your family’s financial road map if the worst was to happen?

Health Insurance

Health Insurance

Health Insurance is insurance designed to cover medical expenses. Singapore is the second most expensive city in South East Asia for medical treatment, and with an aging population health care expenses have risen 20% in 2014 and 10% consecutively in 2016 and 2017 (actual inflation is only 1.3%). It is vitally important you are aware of the costs, and options to take cover that minimises your out of pocket costs before an unforeseen health event occurs.

Income Protection Insurance

Income Protection

Income Protection or disability income insurance is designed to cover up to 75% of your salary income on a monthly basis, should you be unable to work due to an injury or illness. The cost of this insurance can be reduced taking greater waiting periods, or specified payment periods. This insurance is to subsidise your income and give you a safety net whilst not able to work so you can remain focused on your recovery.

Wills & Guardianship

Wills & Guardianship

A Will ensures that your wishes are carried out after you pass away. The purpose of a Will is to transfer your assets efficiently, and as quickly as practical to your chosen beneficiaries. Without a Will your estate may take years to untangle, leaving uncertainty for your loved ones in their time of distress and need. Guardianship is appointed trusted people to look after your children or dependants in the event of your death. If you are an expat, you need to decide who is a temporary guardian in the event of emergency, and who will be responsible for the long term care and welfare of your children and dependants.

Estate Planning

Estate Planning

Estate Planning is a process that extends beyond just preparing a Will. It means analysing and assessing what would happen in the event of death, and understanding the risks and obstacles your estate may face. Then putting in place vehicles and structures to bridge those obstacles and solve the issues. Issues faced may be taxes on death and options to reduce that tax, vehicles such as Lasting / Enduring Powers of Attorney, Trust’s and Trust planning to protect assets, and ensuring your children are cared for with Temporary and Permanent Guardianship.

Retirement Planning

Retirement Planning

We never “retire” from life. Many of us have the goal to be able give up our “day job”. Achieving financial freedom is just that – the freedom to be able to not have to work if you so desire. The earlier you implement a plan to achieve this goal, the earlier you can achieve it. There are several techniques and ways to start working towards this dream – maybe you have an employer sponsored retirement plan, perhaps CPF or Superannuation or similar country specific vehicles. It’s important to understand what you have, where it is, what options are available to you, and what fees and charges are eating away behind the scenes.

Savings

Savings Strategies

You can only do two things with money – spend it or save it. And whatever you save is destined to be spent at some later stage of life. Your ability to earn an income, and your cash flow is the most valuable asset you will ever have. Someone earning $5,000 a month will have earned $2.4 million over a working lifetime. And someone who spends $5 a day on a cup of coffee will have spent $75,000 in a working lifetime. What strategies do you have in place to ensure there are few leakages and you are optimising your capacity to save? Are you taking advantage of the significantly lower tax rates in Singapore and the region?

Global Investing

Global Investing

Constructing a clear investment strategy that is in line with your appetite for risk involves a number of important decisions. From Singapore you have the opportunity to invest globally and construct a well thought through diversified portfolio. This means across all asset classes, as well as having an “emergency fund” for the unexpected. Have any of your various investments “doubled up” on risk by actually having the same underlying assets or shares? What impact does currency play on your overall portfolio and what risks does currency present when you return home?

Cash Flow Planning

Cash Flow Planning

Often in the past, many expats arrived in Singapore with subsidised housing and expenditures covered by their employer. The days of regional and hardship allowances are fast disappearing, and the risk of these expenses has been transferred back onto the employee. I've met plenty of people who’ve been in Singapore for 3-5 years that have travelled all over the region, have Buddha statues, and Middle Eastern rugs and carpets, but very little else saved to show for their time in such a low taxed environment. Having just gained a thirty two (32%) reduction in tax – what have you got to show for it? We can help by providing parameters and statistics of what expected expenditures look like for various family units.

Tax Efficiencies

Tax Efficiencies

There is no doubt Singapore and the region has significantly lower taxes than Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. By investing in certain jurisdictions it can potentially reduce tax burdens and leave you with more of your hard earned money to work to your advantage. It’s important to also understand what risks await you on your return to your homeland – are there any tax obstacles in returning back home and how will that jurisdiction treat your accumulated savings and investments on return? It’s important to weigh up the costs and benefits of such a strategy before proceeding.
